Magoo Ocelot navigates his tree

Posted on March 7th, 2010 by admin

Magoo resides at the Carnivore Preservation Trust (CPT) in Pittsboro, NC. In order to glimpse Magoo, you must either drop by at the right time, or come bearing gifts. Magoo prefers to hang out in his denbox or his large black pipe that slides up his tree. Magoo is very adept at negotiating his tree, but despite their skill, ocelots usually travel on the ground.

Magoo was named for the spectacled cartoon character, presumably because of the white rings around his eyes. (they’re an ocelot trademark!) Wildcats (and other animals) have a membrane in their eye called a tapetum lucidum, that causes their eyes to glow in the dark. Ocelots, and especially Magoo, have white rings around their eyes that further enhance their night vision, just as a football player blackens under his eyes to reduce glare.
